Category:Science and technology in AzerbaijanSensation seeking is an important risk factor for alcohol abuse and dependence in vulnerable adults, but there is little research on how sensation seeking modulates effects of the environment and psychological states on drinking. Also, there is little research on the factors that may serve as moderators in the link between sensation seeking and alcohol use. Social support is an important moderator of the link between sensation seeking and alcohol problems. The current study investigated whether sensation seeking may influence the way in which social support buffers the link between adverse experiences and excessive drinking. The proposed study will use a cross-sectional design, administered an online survey, to investigate whether sensation seeking, adverse experiences, social support and drinking patterns predict alcohol problems in a vulnerable adult population, if sensation seeking modulates the effect of adverse experiences on alcohol problems, and if social support modulates the effect of sensation seeking on alcohol problems. The sample will be comprised of adults with alcohol problems recruited from community agencies (n = 360). Participants will complete a survey that assesses their drinking and sensation seeking, report on whether they have experienced traumatic events, receive social support from family members and social service agency workers, and will report whether they drink with friends. Analyses will examine the extent to which sensation seeking influences the relationship between adverse events and alcohol problems. Aim 1 of the current study will examine whether sensation seeking moderates the relationship between adverse events and alcohol problems. Aim 2 of the current study will test whether social support moderates the relationship between sensation seeking and alcohol problems. Results from the proposed study may yield important information regarding mechanisms that influence the development of alcohol problems and may help identify targets for prevention and intervention. The paper studies the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of Heteroptera at the species level.
